High Angle Rescue

On Thursday December 21st 2023 around 1000hrs, Station 12 along with mutual aid agencies were dispatched by Berks County Department of Emergency Services to a residence in the 1100block of Park Rd in Maidencreek Township. Ladder 12, Rescue 66, Medic 6711, and M5603 responded along with Northern Berks Police Department. Firefighters arrived to find a middle aged male, who was pinched in an elevated well drilling machine, self extricated, now confined approximately 8ft in the air in machinery. Deputy 12 established operations while Chief 12 established Incident Command. Operations and Rope Technical Rescuers from Blandon Fire Company & Muhlenberg Township Fire Rescue formed an Incident Action plan while ensuring machinery and scene was secured. Technical Rescuers along with Emergency Medical Services from Northern Berks EMS, and Muhlenberg Area Ambulance Association utilized numerous skill sets and interventions to perform a “high angle rescue” while prioritizing treatment, and stabilization of the injured victim. Rescuers constructed a 3/1 twin tension mechanical advantage ascent/descent rope control system, high point anchor, bomb proof anchor, and utilized a F.A.S.T Rescue Solutions FAST Board to package/secure the victim upright while maintaining stabilization of the victims injuries. Within approximately 30 minutes of arriving on scene, Rescuers successfully extricated the victim through the high angle system and FAST Board. The victim was immediately descended onto Northern Berks EMS’s litter where care was transferred and transport to Reading Hospital was engaged. #blandonfire
